You
may be the kind of person who is generous
and unselfish in your personal relationships.
If so, then you qualify as being jai
kwâang. Your actions and
manner suggest to those around you that
you care about those who are less fortunate.
You automatically pick up a bar bill or
restaurant check, you offer another person
a lift in your car, or you are the kind
of person who can be friends with your
spouse’s ex-wife or ex-husband.
You offer help or assistance as part of
your daily routine and if you do so long
enough, you are bound to hear a Thai refer
to you as jai
kwâang.
Jai
khOO kwâang khwaang and
náam
jai an kwâang khwaang are
other variations of the adjectival jai
kwâang and refer to the
same kind of considerate, thoughtful and
generous person, although these two jai
phrases are more formal and the degree
of generosity is emphasized. This refers
to the person who is exceptionally broad-hearted
as having a heart as broad as a river
(jai
pen mÊE náam). This
type of person will make that extra effort
beyond what is expected to help someone
needing assistance. When there is a fire
in a slum, they send food, clothing and
building materials to those who are suffering.
A wife who adopts an illegitimate child
of her husband and raises the child as
her own would be seen as having a heart
as broad as a river. |
