When
you feel that you’ve done something
dishonorable or unworthy, you feel ashamed
of your actions. You may have treated
your child, your spouse or your friend
unfairly or without due consideration
for their feelings. Or you have committed
an act in which there is a lie, half-truth,
deception or dishonor involved. The act
of being caught in a lie is a surefire
way of being delivered to this heart state.
In the middle of the night, having announced
that you have stopped smoking, you sneak
out for a cigarette. Your spouse or child
comes into the kitchen and catches you
smoking. Two nights earlier, when you
were discovered sneaking a cigarette,
you promised an oath to never touch another
one. Having been caught breaking this
promise, you may feel aay
jai or lá
aay jai. Another example, you
come across the scene of a road accident.
There is no one else on the road and you
see several injured people at the crash
site. You are in a hurry for an important
meeting, so you tell yourself you can’t
stop to help. Not long afterwards, you
feel shame in your heart for failing to
stop and help the injured.
